Image Entertainment will release Caligula: Four-Disc Imperial Edition on October 2nd. Getting the lavish treatment usually reserved for bona-fide classics, the notorious 1980 film - produced by Penthouse's Bob Guccione - arrives featuring a new hi-def mastered anamorphic widescreen transfer of the unrated cut (from recently uncovered negative elements) and Dolby Digital 5.0 audio.
At last, a version worth purchasing, watching, and studying!Will it be perfect? No.
Will it contain all the known footage? No (legal restrictions - real all about the convoluted story of the movie HERE).
Will it be what Tinto wanted? No.
Will it be in sequence? No.
Will it make sense? Not really.
Will it give you an impression of what the movie was supposed to have been like? Yes!
This is an important first step toward an eventual restoration. Let us hope that this release begins to shake loose the missing materials that are scattered about and hidden away in various mysterious locales. Let us hope, also, that it finally convinces various parties to amend previous legal settlements.
