Oral and anal sex increasing among teens

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - During the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of teenagers and young adults engaging in oral sex and, more commonly, having anal intercourse, according to data from STD clinics in Baltimore, Maryland.

The finding is not all that surprising, Dr. Emily Erbelding from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore told Reuters Health.

She explained that "a few national websites like Myspace.com and Friendster recently have teenagers participating in having oral and anal intercourse."

"Anal sex is the new rap music,It's what's cool, they see all their friends having anal, and they think, that looks cool,I want to do that too"

There was also an increase in rectal sex among young women, "but it was a lot more common than vaginal sex," Erbelding said. Among young women, the prevalence of self-induced anal sex over the period rose from 30 percent to 50 percent.

There may be a general feeling out there that anal sex is safer than intercourse, Erbelding said, and it probably is for some diseases.
